English is the first language in the world in terms of importance, and the second in terms of the number of speakers, and their number is about 800 million people, distributed among England, the United States of America, Australia, Canada, and a number of other countries, and it is the second language in many countries. The English language is of great importance in Libya due to the need for it in many fields: political, economic, commercial and educational. It is needed by workers in the fields of the diplomatic and commercial corps, and in the press, due to the issuance of some newspapers in English. It is required in petroleum institutions, petrochemical companies, industrial companies and other areas of industry, trade and economy. The English language has an effective role in publishing translated books to introduce the world, its culture and civilization. There are many peoples who take English as an official language or a second language.
The study of English language and literature not only qualifies students to teach at all levels of preparatory and secondary school, but also qualifies them to carry out their responsibilities in various fields, including commercial, industrial and political. Graduates of the department can work as managers, consultants, analysts, writers, translators, journalists and other leadership activities.
The Department of English at the College of Languages offers various study materials that enable students to develop their language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. The department also teaches English to all students of the faculties of the University of Tripoli, among the requirements of the university.

Objectives
The English Language Department at the College of Languages aims to graduate specialists in the English language and literature, by granting a specialized bachelor's degree in the English language in the university studies section. In the postgraduate studies section, a master's degree is awarded in the linguistics and literature divisions to contribute to the provision of university professors and researchers. The Department of English seeks to achieve a number of general and specific objectives, as follows:
- Preparation of cadres specialized in the English language.
- Providing students with scientific and practical skills to raise the level of their scientific performance and language competencies.
- Qualify students academically and provide them with the opportunity to obtain high academic qualifications in the field of English language.
- Providing the opportunity to benefit from the latest methods in the fields of learning and teaching English.
